Low Force Waterfalls: High Force's Little Sister

Tucked away in the rugged heart of the North Pennines and right outside Bowlees Visitor Centre is Low Force Waterfalls. While High Force often steals the limelight, Low Force quietly showcases its own beauty, making it a must-visit for anyone craving a dose of nature without the crowds. Here’s why Low Force should be on your radar for your next adventure.

Why Visit Low Force Waterfalls?

Low Force is a series of waterfalls on the River Tees, situated near Middleton-in-Teesdale. Unlike its towering counterpart, High Force, Low Force is more about subtlety. Spread across 70 metres, these waterfalls create a ribbon of water that tumbles over rocks, and is sheltered by lush greenery and rugged terrain.

A Change of Pace

There’s something unique about Low Force. It’s the kind of place where you can take stock and simply enjoy the moment. With fewer visitors than High Force, Low Force allows you to connect deeper with your surroundings. The soothing sound of cascading water and the vibrant natural surroundings offer a perfect backdrop for a peaceful escape.

The Low Force to High Force Trail

For those who love a good hike, the trail from Low Force to High Force is beautiful. This 5-mile circular route meanders alongside the River Tees, guiding you through scenic woodlands and across simple footbridges. The path is easy-going, making it ideal for a stroll. During this walk you'll see both waterfalls and find yourself completely immersed in the stunning surrounding natural landscape of the North Pennines.

Get You Camera's Ready

Low Force is a dream for all photography levels. The ideal times of day are during the soft morning light or the golden hues of late afternoon but you'll take great shots no matter what the time of day. Surrounding Low Falls are many extra walks (available at Bowlees Visitor Centre) for added photo opportunities. The contrast of the rugged rocks, crashing water and vibrant foliage makes for striking photos. Even if you’re not a photographer, you’ll find it hard to resist taking a few snaps.

Wildlife and Nature

The area around Low Force is alive with wildlife. The meadows and woodlands are home to a variety of plants and animals and keep your eyes peeled for birds like the dipper and grey wagtail flitting around the river. In the spring and summer, wildflowers sprinkle the landscape. With a bit of luck, you might even spot otters or deer in the surrounding areas.

A Glimpse into Geology

Low Force isn’t just a pretty face—it also has some fascinating geology. The falls are sculpted from Whin Sill rock, a tough, ancient stone that shapes the rugged landscape of the North Pennines. This geological feature contributes to the distinctive look of the falls and adds an extra layer of interest for those curious about the natural world.

Things to Do Nearby

Beyond the falls, there’s plenty to explore. The Bowlees Visitor Centre is a good place to start, offering information about local walks, wildlife, and the surrounding area. It’s also home to a café where you can grab a bite or a coffee (and all reasonably priced). For those who enjoy a bit of adventure, the River Tees is popular with kayakers and canoeists. Fishing enthusiasts will also find opportunities in the river, which is home to brown trout and grayling.

Getting There

Low Force is easy to reach by car, with parking available at Bowlees Visitor Centre for a donation. If you prefer public transport, buses run from Barnard Castle to Middleton-in-Teesdale, and it’s a short walk from there to the falls. It’s definitely worth giving yourself a few hours to enjoy more of the area but if you don't have a lot of time, even a hour or two visiting will be worth it.

Protecting the Beauty

As always, we ask all our readers to help keep these stunning landscapes clean. The North Pennines AONB Partnership and local conservation groups work to ensure the area remains as beautiful but visitors are encouraged to follow the Countryside Code—take your litter home, keep dogs on leads, and stay on marked paths to help preserve our beautiful landscapes.
